Foreign Professional Qualification Recognition

Recognition Act

The Federal Recognition Act is a crucial tool for Germany to attract and integrate skilled workers from abroad. It grants these workers the right to have their professional qualifications checked against German standards, making Germany an attractive option for them. The Act covers over 600 professions, including doctors and cooks, for which the Federal Government is responsible.

What Current Developments Does the Report Reflect?

The demand for recognition of professional qualifications in Germany is on the rise. Since the Act came into effect in 2012, almost 365,000 applications have been submitted. In 2022 alone, a record 49,500 applications were submitted, and decisions on over 52,000 applications were taken, most within the prescribed three-month period.

Are Applications Being Submitted from Abroad?

Yes, a significant number of applications are submitted from abroad, accounting for 48% of all applications. This indicates that skilled workers are increasingly using recognition of professional qualifications as a means to migrate to Germany.

What Role Does Recognition of Qualifications Play with Regard to the Shortage of Skilled Workers?

With demographic changes posing major challenges to the German economy, many companies rely on foreign skilled workers. Recognition of qualifications plays a significant role, especially in the healthcare sector, which accounted for almost 80% of all applications for recognition in 2022.

Doesn’t the New Immigration Act Make the Recognition Law Redundant?

No, the new Immigration Act does not make the Recognition Law redundant. While the Act opens up new opportunities for entry without prior recognition, recognition of qualifications remains crucial for integrating foreign skilled workers into the labour market and ensuring they secure adequate employment and pay.

What are the Advice and Support Services Available?

The Federal Government’s official online Recognition Portal provides information about recognition of foreign professional qualifications. Additionally, the “IQ contact points” offer initial advice at regional level, and the “BQ-Portal” supports authorities and employers in assessing foreign professional qualifications.
