The European Union’s Enhanced Schengen Visa Rules!

What’s the Big News?

In a significant move, the European Commission adopted specific rules on April 18, 2024, for issuing multiple entry visas to Indian nationals. These rules are more favourable than the standard Visa Code rules that were previously in place. This new ‘cascade’ visa regime is set to provide Indian residents applying for Schengen short-stay visas in India with easier access to multi-year validity visas, provided their passport validity allows it.

How Does the New Visa ‘Cascade’ Regime Work?

Under the newly adopted visa ‘cascade’ regime, Indian nationals who have obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years. This two-year visa will typically be followed by a five-year visa, provided the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During these visas’ validity period, holders will enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

Why This Change Now?

This decision is part of the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which aims for comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, given India’s importance as a partner for the EU.

What Does a Schengen Visa Entail?

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. These visas are not purpose-bound and do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 EU states and four non-EU countries.

This is indeed a new dawn for Indian travelers, making it easier for them to explore the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Europe. It’s a testament to the strengthening relations between the EU and India, and a step forward in fostering global connectivity.
